Correlation of duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus with level of serum alanine aminotransferase

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to find out the correlation of duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus with the level of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

Aims and Objectives: This study aims to find out the correlation of duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) with the level of serum ALT in Jamnagar (Gujarat) region.

Materials and Methods: We have conducted this cross-sectional study at the diabetic clinic in Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital, Jamnagar. One hundred diabetic patients were included in our study. Parameter like serum ALT used. We have divided patients into two groups for study. The first group includes duration of DM <10 years and the second group includes patients having duration of DM more than 10 years and then serum level of ALT was compared in these groups.

Results: Group 1 shows patients having average duration of DM 6.91 ± 1.95 years and serum ALT of these patients was 30.50 ± 5.28 IU/L and this value is statistically significant. Group 2 shows patients having average duration of SM 14.41 ± 3.63 years and serum ALT of these patients was 41.92 ± 7.96 IU/L and this value is statistically significant.

Conclusion: In our study, we found that patient with <10 years of DM having less serum ALT level as compared to patients with more than 10 years of type 2 DM. Serum ALT shows better marker for monitoring hepatic complication in type 2 DM on treatment.
