Efficacy of intermittent vacuum therapy as an adjunct to conventional physiotherapy treatment in patients with low back ache

Abstract
Background:
Radiating low back pain is a relatively common condition, its lifetime incidence is from 13% to 40% and annual incidence ranges from 1% to 3%. Function is impaired, daily activities are altered to accommodate back pain, and quality of life suffers. Therapists have been using strengthening exercises, stretching exercises, nerve mobilization, motor control exercises to treat radiating LBP. IVT is a novel technique used to reduce pain, improve range of motion and improve blood flow to the muscles. Hence, this study wants to check its effect along with standard therapy.

Aim:
To study the comparative effects of IVT and standard physiotherapy in the management of radiating low back pain. The objectives of this study are to assess the effects of IVT and standard physiotherapy on pain, functional abilities, range of motion and to compare the effects of standard physiotherapy alone and standard physiotherapy with IVT.

Method:
A total of 50 patients, 25 in group A & 25 in group B were randomly selected based on inclusion & exclusion criteria. Outcome measures- VAS, Modified ODI & Straight leg raising ROM were assessed pre and post intervention. The treatment was performed for 10 sessions

Results:
This study showed significant improvement in both the groups. When intergroup analysis was done, Group B, which was treated with IVT and ST showed better improvements in VAS and ROM of SLRT. Both the groups showed no significant difference in ODI scores. However, Group B did clinically better as compared to Group A.

Conclusion:
Intermittent Vacuum Therapy along with conventional protocol showed significant improvement in the above outcome measures in low back ache patients. Therefore, Intermittent Vacuum Therapy can be incorporated as a part of rehabilitation in low back ache patients.
