In vivo anti-inflammatory activity of the hydro-ethanolic extract of Adansonia digitata leaves

Abstract
Background:
Adansonia digitata, a plant of the Bombacaceae family is frequently used in traditional African medicineto treat various inflammatory conditions.

Aim:
This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of a dry hydro-ethanolic extract of leaf powder(ADF), reconstituted with physiological water.

Methods:
The in vivo model of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema method is used. The rats received the extract at a dose of 10 mg/kg, while acetylsalicylic acid (10 mg/kg) was used as a reference, and the physiological water (1 ml/100g) was used as a control.

Results:
After oral administration, the extract significantly prevented edema of the rat paw at the 3rd and 5th hour (p <0.05). Thus, the percentage increase in inflammatory edema of the paw was 21.15% ± 9.04%, 49.52% ± 12.75%, and 41.59% ± 13.30 % at 1, 3, and 5 hours after carrageenan injection, respectively.

Conclusion:
These results demonstrate that the leaf extract of A. digitata shows potential anti-inflammatory activity, justifying its use in traditional African medicine to prevent or treat inflammation.
