Estimation of lipid profile among prediabetic and diabetic patients attending Central laboratory, in an apex medical college in eastern India: An observational study

Abstract
Background:
Dyslipidaemia is a metabolic disorder of lipoproteins characterized by abnormal lipid profile. India has a huge burden of diabetes mellitus making India the second highest diabetic capital in the world. Dyslipidemia plays a crucial role in different complications in both prediabetes and diabetes patients.

Aim:
This study was conducted to assess the lipid profile among both the diabetic patients and prediabetic individuals, in a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India.

Methods:
This observational cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 patients attending the Central Laboratory, Medical College, Kolkata, who were advised lipid profile & blood sugar estimation. Data were collected in the case record form & later analyzed using descriptive statistics & unpaired t test.

Results:
From our study we found that, 53% of our study participants were having altered lipid profile with most common lipoprotein abnormality being low high-density lipoprotein (Low HDL) in 82.4% of dyslipidaemic participants. This was also found that, 21.8% of dyslipidaemic participants had abnormalities with all four types of lipoproteins & Atorvastatin was the most common prescribed drug in 98.1% patients of dyslipidaemia. However, there was no significant difference found between the lipoprotein values of diabetes & prediabetes groups.

Conclusion:
Our study shows that dyslipidaemia is very common among patients with diabetes & prediabetes individuals. Lipid profile estimation should be a regular practice among these individual to reduce the future complications.
