Abstract
Background:
Sleep is an actively regulated process and influenced by homeostatic mechanisms in the body. Sleep deprivation and sleep fragmentation cause internal desynchrony leading to numerous ill effects on health. Disorders of sleep is linked to higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinsons Disease, Stroke, poor foetal outcome in pregnant women.

Aim:
Our study aimed at determining various factors impacting the duration of nocturnal sleep among healthy adults.

Methods:
Demographic and anthropometric data were obtained from 124 healthy individuals between the age group of 18 to 75 years. Duration of Physical activity and self-reported duration of nocturnal sleep were obtained. BMI was calculated using Quetlet’s Index. Student t test, One Way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson’s Correlation and linear regression were used.

Results:
Negative correlation was observed with duration of nocturnal sleep and Age (-0.473, p<0.001), BMI ( -0.250, p <0.05) respectively. Mean sleep duration was significantly lower in group with age above 60 years (F=18.6 p<0.001). Mean Sleep duration was significantly lower in group with higher BMI of > 35Kg/m2(F=3.89, p<0.05). 23.1% of changes in sleep duration in the study population could be explained by changes in age and BMI, 6.3% of the change can be explained by changes in BMI alone.

Conclusion:
Age and BMI are found to be important determinants of sleep duration, age being nonmodifiable, BMI is modifiable. Adequate duration of sleep may reduce the risk of developing higher BMI or maintaining optimal duration of sleep may reduce BMI and its ill effect on health.

Key words: Sleep deprivation, Nocturnal sleep, Age, BMI
