Knowledge, attitude, and practice of adverse drug reaction monitoring and reporting among nurses and interns in a tertiary care teaching hospital – A questionnaire-based study

Abstract
Background: Pharmacovigilance program was introduced to improve patient safety. Adverse drug reaction (ADR) monitoring and reporting is the key component of this program.

Aims and Objectives: Objectives of the study were (1) to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of ADR monitoring and reporting among nurses and (2) to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of ADR monitoring and reporting among interns.

Materials and Methods: This was a qualitative, cross-sectional, and questionnaire-based study. A questionnaire containing 40 questions (including the subquestions) was given to study participants. This questionnaire comprises knowledge, attitude, and practice sections.

Results: Data were analyzed in terms of percentages (%) using Excel. 99% of the interns were aware that there is an ADR reporting system in India but only 33% were reported. 93% of the nurses aware of the existence of the ADR reporting system in India, but knowledge about other aspects of pharmacovigilance was poor (<50%) and only 12% were reported ADR.

Conclusion: Overall knowledge and attitude part was good in interns, but there was a lack of motivation in reporting, leading to underreporting. However, in nurses, all the aspects such as knowledge, attitude, and practice were so poor. Suggestive corrective actions needed in nurses were conducting awareness programs and in interns were motivational activities such as including the ADR reporting component in their log book.
