Bilateral complete transverse facial cleft: A case report

Padmaja Rajey Desai, Rajey Maruti Desai.

Abstract
Transverse facial cleft is rare congenital craniofacial anomalies, affecting the esthetics and function of the oral cavity. In the 1st and 2nd branchial arches, it occurs usually with different structural deformities. However, alone occurrence of bilateral facial clefts is rare. Embryonic procedure of mandibular and maxillary approaches of the primary arch of bronchi fails to fuse to form the mouth corner resulting in the development of this anomaly. Number of incidence is identified at birth, at the several times are identified prenatally. In given scenario, the case of complete facial cleft as a bilateral transverse detected by three-dimensional ultrasonography at 19 weeks and 6 days of gestational age in a 24-year-old pregnant patient. The ultrasound findings revealed a singleton intrauterine fetus with normal growth and polyhydramnios (mild). An abnormal fetal face was identified with complete transverse (two sided) facial cleft extended from the mouth through commissure up to both ears. This report illustrates the advantages of three-dimensional ultrasonography in the diagnosis of developmental anomalies prenatally.
