Effect of smoking and pack-years on respiratory system

Abstract
Background: Smokers develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and are the fourth most common cause of death worldwide.

Aims and Objectives: This study aims to assess the effect of smoking on respiratory system with the help of following parameters, namely, peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and respiratory rate and comparing with the age, sex, and body mass index-matched non-smokers (control group) and to correlate the number of pack-years of smoking and age with PEFR.

Materials and Methods: The study was conducted at Santosh Medical College over a period of 2 years. Smokers in the age group of 20–65 years were selected and their consent was taken for participating in the present study.

Results: The mean PEFR among the smokers was 365.8 L/s with standard deviation of 98.39 and standard error of mean 13.915 while the mean PEFR among non-smokers was found to be 388.5 L/s with standard deviation of 113.03 and standard error of mean 15.986.

Conclusion: It was clear from the present study that pulmonary function tests like PEFR are deranged in the smokers than the non-smokers.
